We all have a role to play in creating an Ireland where trans and non-binary people feel safe, equal and included.

Negative  public commentary about the trans community seriously impacts lives.  Such commentary rarely features the voices and views of trans people themselves, nor do they focus on the large proportion of trans people living happy, fulfilled lives.

Our campaign shares the experiences of trans individuals in Ireland and their loved ones. Hear them talk about what it’s like to trans in Ireland today and what the support of their friends, family and community means to them.

“Being an ally means the world.”

What we all want is a society where people feel accepted and safe to be who they are. Let’s make our society more welcoming. You can help by being an ally for trans people in your community. Here’s some tips to get you started…

  • Listen to transgender people. They are the experts on their experiences. You can learn a lot by listening to what they say about the topics that impact their daily lives – from accessing healthcare to employment issues to the impact of social stigma.
  • Inform yourself about trans topics and terminology. These videos are just a starting point. There are lots of books, podcasts, films and documentaries where you can educate yourself about trans lives such as the 2024 film ‘Will and Harper’, The Transgender Issue by Shon Faye (book, non-fiction) and the Netflix documentary ‘Disclosure’.
  • Challenge anti-transgender comments, jokes or remarks. A true ally is active and takes a stand against words and commentary that can cause harm and hurt. Showing support to trans people and calling out anti-trans comments in spaces where your voice can have an impact makes a big difference.
  • Amplify trans voices.  Take listening to another step and ensure that trans voices are centered, heard and promoted. Share our #ProudToBeAnAlly campaign assets on your social platforms.

Some of us may not feel confident speaking about trans issues. It is OK not to know everything and to ask question from a place of kindness. But all of us can feel confident our hearts are in the right place. You can help create a kinder, more supportive society.
